Don Van Vliet (natural Din Glen Vliet on January 15, 1941 in Glendale, California), is a musician & painter, better known under a pseudonym Captain Beefheart.

Vliet's output is rooted around blues music and rock music, but his idiosyncratic, diverse approach largely defies classification. Lot of his operate was conducted by owning a rotating assembly of musicians known as the Magic Band. He was principally the singer & inside possession of an astonishing 4-&-the-half octave vocal range, but Vliet was too the capable harmonica player, and now and again played loud, untrained, free jazz influenced saxophone.

Among a first of "underground rock" musicians, Captain Beefheart's legacy is one of unfortunate record sales, critical eclat, & the devoted charted. His several admirers include Beck, Tom Waits, Woody Allen, PJ Harvey, Peter Christopherson of Coil, David Lynch, David Byrne of Talking Heads, Gary Lucas (one of Van Vliet's former guitar player, & the member of latest incarnation of the Magic Band), Mark E. Smith of The Fall, John Lydon, Jack White of The White Stripes, Michael Balzary (a.k.a. Flea), Matt Groening, John Lecki, Radiohead, Muse and Devo.

Vliet's music has been immensely influential. BBC disc jockey John Peel stated, "If there has ever been such a thing as a genius in the history of popular music, it's Beefheart ... I heard echoes of his music in some of the records I listened to last week and I'll hear more echoes in records that I listen to this week." [http://www.beefheart.com/zigzag/articles/genius.htm]

History

Vliet demonstrated prodigious painting and sculpting talents at a immature age — earning a praise of Augustinio Rodriguez — but claims his parents turned away several scholarship offers. His paintings, typically remindful of Franz Kline's, were later featured in many of his have albums.

The teen friendly relationship using Frank Zappa while both were students at Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, California led to some collaborations above a years, though this relationship was subject to peaks & troughs. Across a years, musicians would drift back & forth from either Vliet & Zappa's groups. Their collaborative act may be noticed on the 1975 album Bongo Fury, along by having Zappa rarity collections A Misused Episodes & Mystery Disc. Besides luminary is Beefheart's vocal in "Willie The Pimp" from Zappa's otherwise instrumental album Hot Rats. (1969)

Vliet was reportedly quite shy, however breaa to imitate the deep voice of blues singer Howlin' Wolf. Finally growing comfortable performing, he learned harmonica, and played as much as southern California, at dances and little clubs.

Beefheart got antecedently worked by having local groups like The Omens and The Blackouts and formed the Magic Band inside 1964 with guitarists Alex St. Clair and Doug Moon, bass guitarist Jerry Handley and drummer Paul Blakely.

Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band signed to A&M Records and released a successful single, a version of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy". Their number one album, however, wwhen rejected per label as existence as well blackball & uncommercial. Moon & Blakely were replaced by Antennae Jimmy Semens and John 'Drumbo' French respectively, as well as adding Ry Cooder (guitarist) and released their remixed album, Safe as Milk. Inside mid-1967 a band was invited to perform at a landmark Monterey International Pop Festival, but based on data from a liner notes to the Video re-release of Safe When Milk, Ry Cooder convinced a class action does'nt to pop up, when he felt that a band was non quick for such an significant showcase.

These early recordings in the late 1960s were fairly conventional blues rock with touches of psychedelic music, and gave single hints of the unique music to came. A 1968 album, Strictly Personal, does help as a transition between a blues rock of the singles, "Safe as Milk", & a survive "Mirror Man" album, and a innovative explorations to came.

Meanwhile, Beefheart's childhood friend, Frank Zappa, formed Straight Records and signed Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band, which had added Zoot Horn Rollo (guitarist), Rockette Morton (bassist) and The Mascara Snake (bass clarinetist), resulting in the landmark 1969 album Trout Mask Replica.

Trout Mask Replica
Regarded by numbers of fans when Beefheart's masterpiece, Trout Mask Replica was — & remains — one of a unknown, virtually all hard albums around rock music history. A class action rehearsed Vliet's hard compositions for eight months, residing communally in conditions drummer John French described as cultlike.

A Twenty-eight songs in Trout Mask Replica drew in blues music, Bo Diddley, free jazz, sea shanties and much supplementary, however a relentless practice blended a music into an iconoclastic whole of conflicting tempi, harsh slide guitar, loping drumming, and honking saxophone and bass clarinet.

Vliet's vocals ranged from either growling blues singing to frenzied falsetto to laconic, casual ramblings. His lyrics often seem impenetrably unknown & nonsensical, but nigher examination reveals complex poetic use of wordplay, metaphor and all manner of information: music history, American and international politics, the Holocaust, Steve Reich, gospel music, conformity and much sir thomas more. Mayhap due to Vliet's talent as the painter, several of the songs in that & subsequent works contain a intense ocular story.

Although a album was profits recorded survive, Vliet apparently recorded tremendously of a vocals when isolated from either either a rest of a band around a different room, exclusively existence inside unfair synch by owning the music by hearing the cold-shoulder healthy outflow from the more room.

(Matt Groening has stated his first thought upon hearing Trout Mask Replica was that it was teasing, hard & ostentatious, however and so unique that he may not prevent listening to that. He okay, lists a album when one of his favorites.)

Critic Steve Huey writes that a album's influence "was felt more in spirit than in direct copycatting, as a catalyst rather than a literal musical starting point. However, its inspiring reimagining of what was possible in a rock context laid the groundwork for countless future experiments in rock surrealism, especially during the punk/new wave era." Later music

Lick My Decals Off, Baby (1970) continued in the similar experimental vein, although them 1972 follow ups, The Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot, were much supplementary commercial. A Magic B& left Beefheart and formed Mallard. Beefheart formed the freshly Magic B& and freed Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans & Moonbeams; neither album was critically well received.

In the late 1970s, Captain Beefheart observed that there was the immature generation of musicians great to function by having him & capable of swimming his music. Inside many subjects it got learned his music from either records prior to tend auditions. Keyboard streaming video player & bassist Eric Drew Feldman (who joined inside 1976), guitar player Jeff Moris Tepper (world health organization joined inside 1975 or even 1976), drummer Robert Williams (who joined inside 1977), & guitar player Gary Lucas (who appeared on the previous deuce Beefheart records & was too Beefheart's manager), experienced been Beefheart fans since their teens.

Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) (1978) was largely regarded as bringing a class action back to form fallowing a lacklustre releases of a early Seventies, featuring again the innovative & nonconcentric style of the sooner albums. A fantabulous Doc at the Radar Station (1980) helped establish Beefheart's late resurgence when even a virtually all systematically originative period of his musical career. In that time, Beefheart mass produced many appearances in David Letterman's program, and performed in Saturday Night Live.

Fallowing Ice Cream for Crow (1982), Beefheart retired from music & became the critically acclaimed painter.

Within recent years, Vliet has be somewhat reclusive & abandoned music, stating he potty produce far additional money painting. His art is when extreme & innovative when wwhen his music, & commands high numbers, besides as comparisons to Pablo Picasso and Franz Kline. A bit of of his recent sounds & noises were captured in his guitar player Moris Tepper's album Moth to Mouth.

Vliet presently sleep in Northern California, and is reportedly suffering from either multiple sclerosis or a similar problem.

The Magic Band, fronted by John French, reformed without Beefheart inside 2003.

Influence

Numerous elastic (like the Clash) develop claimed the Beefheart influence, although couple have truly been a cappella to assimilate Beefheart's idiosyncratic approach. Tom Waits's shift in artistic counsel, starting by owning Swordfishtrombones, is said to be due to his married woman introducing him to Beefheart's music. Punk The Minutemen were great fans of Beefheart's music, & were arguably among a pack to profits synthesize his music by having their have, especially in their early output, which featured disjointed guitar & irregular, galloping rhythms.

Numbers of musicians world health organization keep close at hand worked by owning Captain Beefheart assume it to become a formative own experience of their lasts when musicians (despite a rigours of Beefheart's irregular methods). A few one alumni use at times later on obtained collaborators world health organization besides seem to keep close at hand been touched using Beefheart's originative spirit. Fallowing Beefheart left a music business, Eric Drew Feldman played with Snakefinger, Pere Ubu, P. J. Harvey and Frank Black. Gary Lucas played guitar and collaborated using Jeff Buckley.

Inside 2000, The White Stripes released a limited (1300 copies) red-&-white Septet" vinyl disc on Sub Pop records' Singles Club. The disc contained covers of 3 Captain Beefheart songs: The Party Of Special Things To Do, China Pig, and Ashtray Heart.
